REMOLINO DE SUERTE

(SWIRL OF LUCK)

2021 Brooklyn
Van Alen Gowanus Block Party
Duration: approximately 25 minutes
A collaborative work performed in the public space.
In 1 continuous and uninterrupted session, 20 participants pass 100 small objects from hand to hand, accompanied by 4 percussionists, along with unlimited number of supporting musicians from the public.

The work imagines a cooperative system of reciprocal care. It is conceived as a coordinated action invoking mutual protection through the circulation and distribution of good luck in the form of talismanic objects. To the sound of live percussion, the objects are whirled through an enacted cycle of transference and then discharged into the world as gifts or good wishes. Exactly 100 amulets — from near and far – are passed among the participants in a winding sequence. As the objects move from one hand to another, they are collectively prepared to be offered for individual safekeeping and protection.
